Membership Renewals

Membership renewals are flooding in. Mike Pearce has run a couple of WebCollect clinics (more to come) and Sarah Benfield, who only recently joined the membership team, is coping admirably with a very steep learning curve, many thanks to you both.

CVLSC Past, Present & Future – March 22nd, 7.30 pm

An interesting talk with contributions from Brian Brookes, David Macklin, Rob Mitchell and friends, with MC Hugh Whatley.

Food available from 6.30 pm until 7 pm. Bar open of course!! Email Helen Martin if you would like food, we need to give Rob Hatherell an idea of numbers.

We are taking the opportunity of this special evening to recognise the huge contribution of the Trustees over the years as we move to incorporation. There will be a short presentation to them at 7.30.

Also, coincidentally, Mike Meloy and Alan Coventry are standing down as Chief PB Instructor and Hon Dinghy Bosun respectively.

PLEASE BE EXTRA VIGILANT ABOUT LOCKING THE OUTER GATE and please challenge anyone you think is not a member. Genuine members will understand and won’t take offence!

This is because there have been a number of “incidents” around the lake, including the launching of a Laser from the club with fishing net and paddle on board. Thanks to the vigilance of Mike and Sandie, who happened to be at the club on a Thursday, and to the efforts of the Bristol Water Rangers, the Laser has been returned undamaged.

Sailing Report – Andy Harris – Handicap Fleet Captain

Last Saturday was a quiet affair for the Feva training, Millfield School Fireflys and the few other boats that ventured out, with the wind not exceeding 5 mph for most of the day. On Wednesday the wind didn’t exceed 0-1 mph most of the day but the lake looked absolutely stunning!

Conditions were much better for the Frostbite series racing on Sunday with enough wind for hiking out most of the time, although maybe not enough for the trapeze boat sailors to really stretch their legs. With the wind from the south west conditions near the clubhouse shore were very shifty and a little gusty. Race Officer Julian Cooke had limited options as the club line had to be used with the committee boat not yet available, but he was able to set a good figure-of-eight course with beat, run, beat and a long reach to test all points of sailing.

All fleets had good turnouts in the better weather. 13 Handicap boats sailed, Colin Evans taking the honours in the Finn in the morning but being pipped by Andy and Jonathan Harris’ National 12 in the afternoon. The 8 boat Flying Fifteen fleet was won by Andy Bones and Lynne Adams in the morning. Bill Chard and Ian Cadwallader were runners up but made good to take the afternoon race. Jon Lewis sailed consistently to score bullets in both Laser fleet races.

Probably the closest racing of the day was to be found in the ever strengthening Solo fleet. Chris Goldhawk won in the 9 boat fleet in the morning but it was the turn of Steve Penfold in the afternoon, a nice way for Steve to celebrate his 40th birthday!

All the powerboats have had their annual service and some upgrades and, weather permitting, the committee boat will be back on the water next Wednesday.

  • Lake and Cake – 1st April. The first of the year. Meet at 13.45 ready to go on the water at 14:00.
