Sailing Report – Helen Martin, Vice Commodore

There was a buzz at the club on Saturday with a good turnout from CLADS, Lake and Cake and several families enjoying the sunshine and breezy conditions. A sign of the progress made by so many “lake and cakers”, a year or two ago several of the sailors wouldn’t have gone out in such strong and gusty wind.  It was a perfect day too for the PB L2 course,  nine members developing their skills with their calm and patient instructors (thank you Steve, Jeff and Mike).
Lighter breeze on Sunday brought another good turnout for the Admiral’s Chase, only one left, this coming Sunday.

Wednesday days remain quiet in the holiday season – it’s a lovely time to enjoy the lake with safety cover between 10am and 2pm.  There has been some comment that the numbers participating on Wednesday evenings seems fewer than last year, so I looked at the numbers (2 races to go of course and not including the dozen or so cruising sailors):

Congratulations to our travelling sailors!

Chew Valley Lake sailing club has been well represented this Summer at sailing venues all over the UK and further afield.
Particular congratulations go to Ellie and Freya Cumpsty who won the club trophy for CVLSC at the UK laser nationals last week.

Also to the Scorpion sailors competing at the nationals at Castle Cove, and the amazing feats of the Flying Fifteen fleet at Falmouth week this week, including winning the ‘Standing on one leg’ competition.

Last minute bookings available for August Antics!

Home for Bank Holiday weekend with the kids?  Last minute bookings are available for August Antics – the club’s annual festival of sailing fun for ages 8 to 16.  It takes places over the Saturday and Sunday of August Bank holiday weekend and is open to sailors of all abilities (including complete beginners).  You don’t need your own boat.  The cost is £45 per child which covers both days of sailing.  Click here to book your places now – last minute bookings close Sunday 20th August.

Grand Parade of Sail Sunday 3rd September

All boats and sailors are welcome….. cruising sailors, CLADS, Chew Crew, racers and others, to take part in our celebration of 50 years of sailing at Chew Valley Lake.
The plan is to get as many boats on the water as possible to sail past the Commodore and invited guests (including past Commodores and founder members).
Dress your boat with bunting and flags for this special occasion!

There will be two short briefings:

  • 10am for those taking part in the Age trophies race in the morning (parade of sail will follow straight after the race)
  • 11.30am for those sailing in the parade only.
