The Handicap Fleet battling for a favoured starboard end start on 25 February

Sailing Report, 9 March

The unseasonal burst of Winter meant the cancellation of everything at Chew last weekend. Like me, I hope you dusted off those long stored sledges and enjoyed some exhilarating activity that didn’t involve pulling on a drysuit! However, the week before, Frostbite races ‘6’ did get sailed in a blustery wind…

That sibling rivalry between the Jones brothers continued in the Handicap fleet with Andy keeping Steve behind him all day. But still, the overall lead in both am and pm series is in the hands of our visitors – the RS800 in the morning and Graham Cranford-Smith in the Merlin in the afternoon.

Andy Bones finished ahead of Bill Chard in the morning Fifteen race and then Ian Cadwallader triumphed in the afternoon.

Cathy Bartram, our Club Secretary and budding hotshot Laserer, is leading both the am and pm series. She added another win to her score in the morning but, in the afternoon the fleet captain, Gus Cameron, asserted himself and took the bullet.

Membership Renewals

Yes, it’s that time of year again – renew it or lose it!

Thanks to everyone who has renewed so promptly. It really helps the treasurer and membership secretary and duties team.

Working Party Saturday 17 March 09.30-12.00

Tea & Bacon Butties Included!

Build up an appetite for the 6 Nations bonanza in the afternoon, help your club and meet fellow members. You could combine it with a tidy up of your boat park space.

Depending on numbers there are 3 main tasks some more weather dependent than others:

  • Weed pulling (again) upper boat park- please bring seriously thick gloves and loppers/secateurs.
  • Clubhouse surround spruce up – washing external wood and metal work – you need buckets and rubber gloves, cloths and cleaning fluid provided.
  • Clubhouse surround spruce up – debris removal immediately around the clubhouse – you need shovels /spades, gloves.

To help plan what we actually do please let Helen know if you intend to come: commodore@chewvalleysailing.org.uk

Looking Forward

The poor weather has delayed both the Bathymetric survey and the construction of a new electric sub-station mentioned in my last news. Expect to see the work continuing on both of these in the next couple of weeks.
