New Year, new resolutions – your club needs you
First of all may I wish you a happy and healthy New Year and good sailing in 2018.
We are fortunate to belong to such a wonderful club and, courtesy of Bristol Water, to have access to the best inland water in the south west. Thank you to everyone who made 2017, our 50th Anniversary year, such an enjoyable one. We look forward to the next 50 with the imminent signing of the lease. Many thanks to Rob Mitchell for seeing this through to a positive conclusion.
You will have noticed that the first phase of improvements to the fabric of the building are complete and much needed work has been done to the slipways and pontoons. There is more still to be done, not only completing the external decoration and routine maintenance, but also attending to various compliance and health and safety regulations, consideration of the gate access and the gents changing rooms.
You are fortunate to have a very committed and enthusiastic general committee and sailing committee and a small but growing number of members who take on projects or oversee one aspect of the club’s activities. We are ALL volunteers and our time is as precious to us as I am sure yours is to you.
How can you help?
We need members to come forward to help us with the following (in no particular order):
- Regular checks on the First Aid kits
- Social secretary and a small team to help
- Admin support
- New members team to join Caroline Hughes, making contact with new members and welcoming them to the club
- A dedicated team to help promote and market the club. Things like: Push the Boat Out (PTBO) day and follow up to it, organising a couple of Try Sailing days, representing the club at the Bristol Harbour Regatta and other local events
- Occasional working parties for house and ground projects – the upper boat park and play area for example
- Bar assistants
- Recycling “champions”
Don’t be shy in coming forward, the more we spread the load the more fun it is for everyone!!
Please get in touch via email, or talk to me at the club…
…or, become a Sailing Instructor
As enthusiastic sailors, perhaps you’d like to pass on your enthusiasm and skill to others by becoming a qualified sailing instructor, and helping with sailing courses at Chew for beginners, youngsters and improvers. I have been an instructor for several years; teaching others to sail or helping novices to improve or to have a go at racing is, without doubt, one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things I do. If you are interested, come along to the club and find out more on Sunday 14th January, 3pm.
Please let me know if you intend to come, or if you are interested but can’t make the meeting.
Best wishes,
Helen Martin – Commodore
